Winter - Spring Meet Wrap Up

MILBY, WAGNER TAKE CROWNS

FOR ROSECROFT WINTER – SPRING MEET

(Fort Washington, MD – June 2, 2013)     Familiar faces topped the leader boards for Rosecroft Raceway’s 2013 winter-spring meet following the track’s June 1 finale.

Frank Milby won his second consecutive driving title with 55 wins out of a meet leading 231 starts.    Longtime Rosecroft veteran trainer John Wagner won the conditioners title for the second time since 2011 with 26 winners in 157 starts.

The 25-date meet featured several racing highlights topped by the fourth fastest mile in Rosecroft history – a 1:49.4 effort by the four-year-old Shady Breeze on May 21.

The purse schedule at Rosecroft continued its upward rise – an average of over $50,000 in daily overnights was distributed in the early 2013 meeting, a 150% increase from the purse schedule of its first post-bankruptcy meet in the fall in 2011.    Another purse increase is likely when the 29-date fall meet commences on September 14.

A continued commitment to Maryland horsemen was exemplified by the success of the Maryland Preferred racing program at Rosecroft.     Providing entry preference to all Maryland owned, trained, sired and foaled horses, over 70% of the horses entered and purses earned were horses designated under this preference program.    Over one-third of all the races conducted at Rosecroft in the winter-spring were exclusively for Maryland preferred horses.   For those preferred races with 8 or more starters a bonus of 10%, increased to 20% mid-meet, was added to the base purse for those races.

A $100 payment to horses finishing beyond 5th position was also instituted with the start of the most recent meet.

Another highlight of the early season at Rosecroft was the return of Thoroughbred simulcasting on January 1, bringing the Triple Crown events to Rosecroft for the first time since 2008.    Full card simulcasting on the best harness and thoroughbred tracks, day and night, continues daily.   There is no charge for parking or admission at Rosecroft for live racing or simulcasting.
