Wagner & Burton record “double doubles” at Rosecroft on Tuesday night card
Driver-trainers John Wagner and Brian Burton recorded training and driving double on a card that also featured the seasonal track mark set in the opener by Mark Gray and Poker Champ in a time of 1:53. The Dan Herbst conditioned oval was smoking hot with four lifetime marks set in the first four races and a total of five lifetime marks set, two lifetime marks tied and a personal seasonal mark set.
Wagner drove the winner Montabello Ike to a front running score in the second race but had to hold off hounding pressure during the final 3/8 mile to prevail in 1:57.1. He returned to the winner’s circle after a wire to wire win in the eighth race with Eight O’clock Rock who trotted to a lifetime mark equaling 1:58 under cruise control late. Wagner then turned the lines on Victory Nut to co-owner Scott Woogen in the featured tenth race, a “Winners Over” trot. Woogen waited patiently until unleashing a huge closing kick to upset favored Stargazer Lily (Justin Vincent) in a seasonal mark of 1:57.4. Cutty (Justin Hite) was a nose back in third after trying it first over. Wagner trains Victory Nut.
Brian Burton continued his winning ways at Rosecroft breaking Doomsday Hanover’s maiden with a down the road score in a quick 1:56.2. Burton returned to the winner’s circle with Come On Ridge after the ninth race in a lifetime mark of 1:56.3. Burton quarter-moved and never looked back with this one.
Donnie Russell had driving double on the evening winning the sixth race with conditioner Greg Trotto’s Gold Like U and then won the nightcap with the “white-hot” Lyons Frank who made it four in a row for trainer Trotto. Trotto has conditioned the winner for five starts now and Lyons Frank has won for a conditioned race, $5,000 claiming tag, starter allowance and for a tag of $7,000 in the last three weeks.
