I Told Gordy tells us all

I Told Gordy, Varsity Hanover and Gottaservesomebody headline Tuesday

Rosecroft Action.

On a cold March night the racing action at Rosecroft was red hot. I Told Gordy, trained and owned by Thomas Swann,  used a two hole trip to win the Winners Over Handicap over favored Gone Nuclear (Frank Milby).  Driver Justin Brenneman worked out a perfect trip and pounced on a hard used leader to set the meet’s fastest time of 1:53.4. Gone Nuclear was second best in a good effort.

That was just a preview of the slugfest that would take place in the final. Varsity Hanover, owned and trained by James Whalen Jr., was favored and driven by his favorite pilot Justin Vincent. Varsity fired to the lead, yielded to Rocknroll Jewel near the quarter and was back on the point 5/8ths from home. Gottaservesomebody had pushed out of the three hole and to the leader’s throatlatch by the 5/8ths pole.

Gottaservesomebody and Varsity Hanover battled every step of the final 3/8th of the mile, neither giving an inch in an all-out war.  Around the final turn they paced and Varsity couldn’t shake off Gottaservesomebody and driver Jeff Lieberman. These two, the veteran winner of over $340,000 lifetime (Gotta) and the young upstart sophomore (Varsity) matched strides the length of the stretch and in the shadow of the wire Varsity put a desperate head in front.  The inquiry light immediately popped on and after a lengthy inquiry Varsity was disqualified to second for a violation of the pylon rules and Gottaservesomebody was placed first.

The final time was 1:53.4 and tied the season’s mark at Rosecroft set one race earlier by I Told Gordy.

Drivers Justin Brenneman and Russell Foster recorded driving doubles on the card. Also, seventy year old Alvin Lineweaver  showed he still could get one to the winner’s circle with a powerful first over drive to score on trainer-owner Ronald Lineweaver ‘s DVC I’s Magical in the ninth race paying $34.20 to win.

Rosecroft will hold qualifiers on Friday, March 30th this week with a first post of 11 a.m. due to a rugby tournament being held Saturday afternoon. The box for qualifiers will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon March 29th. Racing will return to Rosecroft Saturday evening March 31, with a first post of 7:25.
